School Therapy Services – Covering the wider Derby area

Specialised School Therapy Services

At The Therapy Smith, therapeutic support is crafted with care, rooted in professional expertise, shaped by compassion, and designed to meet the unique needs of school communities.

With extensive experience delivering art therapy, consultation, training, and staff support across a wide range of educational settings, I offer trusted input that benefits young people, families, staff, and the wider school system.
Whether working directly with pupils, supporting staff wellbeing, or advising on inclusive approaches to emotional health, my services are tailored to each school’s context, always with integrity, creativity, and a deep respect for the stories held within. When therapeutic thinking is embedded in school life, it can strengthen relationships, foster resilience, and create safer spaces for everyone to thrive.

Onsite School Art Therapy

I offer on-site art therapy for children and young people within the school environment. Sessions can also be arranged externally, held within a dedicated therapy space in Derby, or online. Sessions provide a safe, creative space for pupils to explore feelings, build resilience, and express themselves through image and metaphor — especially when words are hard to find.

Therapy within schools allows for:

  • Early intervention in familiar surroundings
  • Consistent support alongside academic and social pressures
  • Creative expression that fosters emotional literacy and self esteem
  • Collaboration with staff to support the wider system around the child

Whether a pupil is navigating anxiety, bereavement, identity questions, or relational challenges, therapy offers a gentle, containing space to be seen and heard

Supervision Services

Working in schools is emotionally demanding. Staff often hold complex stories, manage behavioural crises, and support children through trauma — all while juggling curriculum, safeguarding, and pastoral care. I offer reflective supervision for school staff, including teachers, SENCOs, pastoral leads, and all support staff. These sessions are confidential, non-judgmental, and grounded in therapeutic principles.

Supervision provides:

  • A space to reflect on emotional impact, boundaries and relational dynamics
  • Support with the emotional weight of safeguarding dilemmas, emotional burnout and vicarious trauma
  • Tools for resilience, regulation and self awareness, supporting safer work practices
  • A restorative pause, to reconnect with values and purpose

Supervision is not therapy, but it can be therapeutic. It helps staff feel held, validated and better equipped to support themselves and others.

Consultation

Schools are rich, complex environments — full of care, creativity, and challenge. When emotional needs ripple through classrooms, staff teams, and leadership, it helps to have a therapeutic lens on the bigger picture. I offer bespoke consultation to schools, drawing on my experience as an art therapist, school mental health lead and university educator. These sessions are collaborative, reflective, and tailored to your setting’s unique needs.

Consultation can support:

  • Whole-school approaches to emotional wellbeing and inclusion
  • Staff confidence in responding to trauma, behaviour and emotional distress
  • Creative strategies for embedding emotional safety into the school culture
  • Better understanding of the emotional school environment

Whether you’re navigating a specific concern or seeking long-term change, consultation offers a space to pause, reflect, and plan with therapeutic insight

Training

Supporting pupils’ mental health starts with supporting the adults around them. I offer bespoke training sessions for school staff that blends therapeutic insight with practical tools — helping teams feel more confident, connected, and equipped to respond to emotional needs. These sessions are interactive, inclusive, and grounded in real school-life challenges. They can be tailored for whole staff teams, pastoral leads, SENCOs, or leadership groups.

Training themes include:

  • Understanding trauma, attachment and emotional distress in pupils
  • Responding to behaviour through a relational lens
  • Supporting pupil regulation and resilience
  • Staff wellbeing and burnout prevention
  • Individual topics such as anxiety, self harm, sensory integration and sleep hygiene, plus many more on request

Training can be delivered as twilight sessions, during INSET days, or ongoing CPD. Whether you’re looking for a one-off workshop or a longer-term programme, I’ll work with you to shape something that fits your school’s ethos and needs.
